Pros and Cons

Pros

I am very happy with the Schwinn Phocus 1600. Here are my observations and reasons I gave it 5 stars. I highly recommend this bike to anyone looking for a high-quality road bike that is priced right.

  1. The bike came well packed with several cardboard tubes around the frame, bubble wrap around the handlebars, and many tie wraps to hold all the parts snugly together.
  2. The tires are high quality and the Schrader valves are secured to the wheels, so they don’t push in when you fill the tires with air. In my opinion, the 700X23 tires look good on this bike, and the factory tires look to be of very good quality and adequate size.
  3. It has a handy kickstand.
  4. Both front and rear wheels are quick release.
  5. I put the chain on and both front and rear shifters were adjusted properly, and the bike shifted through all gears nicely without any further adjustments.
  6. Easy to assemble, it took me about the same amount of time to assemble as it did for me to unwrap it out of all the protective packaging. Bike comes with a very nice user manual.
  7. Factory seat has memory foam feel and a good amount of cushion.
  8. There are brake quick disconnects that allow the brakes to be released to remove the wheels more easily.
  9. The brake and shifter handle horn make a very nice grip to rest your hands on while riding and it is very well padded.
  10. The machined rims look very nice and provide a smooth braking surface.
  11. Colors were much brighter in real life than what is pictured on the website. It is a very attractive paint scheme...with carbon coat and lime green accents on the frame and on the seat.

Cons

If you know the general placement of things, this bike is quite easy to put together. On the inaugural ride, it went well…did have one lockup on the chain which will need to be further tested but it didn’t cause any accidents. Moves quite fast and may even be lighter than my first specialized bike back in 2016 or 17. It even has the carbon fiber fork.

I don't know anything about bikes. I'm a 30+ year old novice when it comes to bikes. I just ride them. Prior to having this outstanding bike, I bought an $80 used bike from Craigslist because I only plan to commute from home to the subway station which is a little over a mile. I live in Oakland, and it gets hilly, and after a month my bike began to have lots of problems. I was working so hard to pedal, and it seemed like everyone was flying past me when I was riding the Craigslist bike. Eventually, I preferred to walk but missed getting some form of morning exercise and purchased this bike. This bike looks so modern and very trendy. It rides so smooth, and now I'm seeing it wasn't that I was some poor out of shape guy on a bike which is why people were passing by me all the time, it's because a lot had better bikes than the Craigslist one I had. This bike is a lot lighter too. I did pay for someone to put it together. I attempted to do it, but then got stuck about 75% of the way. I read someone suggested you get it tuned up and I heeded. If you're a novice, I suggest you do it too for safety reasons. It was $90 for me. About me, I'm 5"9 215 lbs muscular guy. The bike works for my body type.

Awesome bike!!! I love it!

For the price, this is an excellent entry-level road bike. The flat bar is nice, but the grips slide around and needed to be swapped out (this is the only real negative about this bike, I'd take a quarter star off). The geometry is great for speed and hill climbing. The derailleurs shift quickly, smoothly, and accurately. They only required a little adjustment out of the box. The brakes do squeal, which is inherent on some disk brakes, so I'm not sure if the adjustment is off or it's just the pads. It was very easy to assemble. Requires only a few basic tools. Adjustable wrench (or open-end wrenches), a set of good hex keys, and a screwdriver is all I needed. I would have a local bike professional tune it up after assembly if you don't know how to adjust the derailleur and brakes. However, YouTube has videos, and it's not hard once you get the hang of what everything adjusts for. I did need a gel cover for the seat or would definitely recommend riding shorts. I ride about 20 miles a day on this bike and am overall very happy with it!
